I think I'm okay with this.

I'm definitely, unexpectedly writing Nathan Petrelli in this "original" fic. He's a fun character to write, and he fits this AU just fine. I might need to make myself a Nathan icon, and I hope this means I'm finally writing in another fandom.

Lex Luthor/MR fans...

[livejournal.com profile] dramady has called me out, and I need your help. I'm looking for pictures of the lump. You know, THE lump on the back of MR's head featured in many SV fics.

You see, she teases me about the lump. She considers it unattractive. And because I have no pictures of it on my hard drive? She says I'm not a true fan. Not a true fan. I still watch SV. At this crappy point in the series? Bothering to show up on Thursday nights makes me a true fan. I'm dedicated, I tell ya.

But back to the lump. Clark makes it erotic, so please... show her the beauty of the lump. Its boldness. Its beauty. Its flavor. Smooth to the tongue. Soft to the touch. Hard beneath. Post any pictures or fic references you have in comments. We'll bring her to the dark side of the lump.

*mumbles* Not a true fan *mumbles*

Back from anniversary dinner...

Husband has an affinity for nicknames. Oh dear. Married this long, you'd think he couldn't think up another one. You'd think he wouldn't feel compelled to think up another one. But no.

And he gets way too....

Because the story I told when I came back from dinner? One he'd never heard before in all these years... about my father telling me I "had a touch of polio as a baby." And my scepticism. How could one HAVE "a touch of polio?" I don't believe it. I was born in 1966. Can that have happened? I don't think so.

Husband leaped on this story saying, "But you do have little polio shoulders."

o_0

So now he's translated "my little polio shoulders." Because -- oh yeah -- the nicknames? Almost always in French. For some reason. Don't ask me. I don't know.

This one will stick. He's too excited about it.

Mon petit d'epaules des poliomyelite.

Is that even translated correctly? Geez.

Neither of us can stop laughing.

Pages written and posted to private. I missed yesterday, but I jumped back in. Go me.

Didn't want to cook a thing today. See? Domesticity in limited quantities for this woman. One intensive week and I won't miss it until Spring Break. Let's hope the food lasts that long. Sick of eating out.

I still need to do something with all that squash.

On another subject, somebody please explain to me why Angelina and Wynona don't make out in "Girl, Interrupted." Some excellent eyefucks/UST in this film. Oh, the frustration!!! *shakes fist*

ETA: Am watching Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut. I'm only in the opening credits, but wow. Cheese. I hope it gets better.

ETA: The Richard Donner Cut is definitely not holding up, but it's fun to watch an alternate version of the movie.

Cooking is so strange.

Just made a vegetarian carrot soup with a simple base of olive oil, onions and garlic. It also has lemon juice, basil, and soy sauce.
ETA: Sea salt, black pepper, crushed red pepper. Duh! Why did I forget to mention those? The last explains the spicey flavor.

After I cooked it all down and blended, it tasted spicey, but it reminded me too much of baby food. The carrots overwhelmed it, I think. So I thought, "brandy." Got the brandy down. Sniffed it. Sniffed the soup. Said, "I don't think so." Got the rum down. Sniffed both. Said, "Yes." And it worked. Now the carrot flavor has backed way off, bringing up the spice, the onion, and the lemon. I don't taste the rum at all, but it's much better. It's actually a very good soup all of a sudden. I don't understand how these things work. I'm just glad when they do.

This morning I made and stored black-eyed peas. Not sure if I posted that earlier.

Staying on schedule

Four pages written and posted to "private," and I'm feeling intrigued by what these people are thinking/feeling/doing. I'm feeling joy. I'm liking this. Glad I'm at it again.

Today's cook and freeze for the semester is of my "throw some shit in a pot" variety. The freezer is almost full:

Italian chicken -- I don't have a snappier name. It's chicken baked with artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, red wine, garlic, oregano, basil, paprika, parmesan and misc. veg. Today I used sweet peas.

Smokey bacon vegetable soup -- made this one up tonight out of my head. Fried bacon to render fat, added a splash of red wine when the fat started to burn away, sauteed chopped onion in the result and then added olive oil for more fat, chopped celery and chopped carrot. Added garlic to sautee. When all vegetables tender, I added a quart of beef stock from the fridge (saved from the other day), lots of red wine, a quart of water, tomato paste left over from cooking the other day, and brought to a boil. Added sea salt, pepper, crushed red pepper, fresh mushrooms, thyme, frozen mixed veggies, can of kidney beans, can of diced tomatoes. Cooked down. Smelled smokey, so I brought that up with some Worstershire. Cooked down some more. When really smokey and tastey, I decided it was probably done and I shouldn't mess with it anymore. I think it will go well with French bread, a salad, and a dollop of sour cream.

This happens when the child’s vacation coincides with one’s own. “Mom? Whatcha doin’?” Mom explains the four pages per day plan, so daughter gets out her laptop to monkey see, monkey do. And writes. A story. She’s hit her four pages. Don’t ask about my progress. We’ve been at this all day, with her reading to me every time she finishes a paragraph.

She’s writing about a war between robots and fairies, though she thinks she may drop the fairies and go with a war between robots and humans. Her protagonist’s name is Gilda. Ah the workings of the subconscious after seeing Rigoletto.

But I write on my bed-desk, and she’s sitting right beside me, writing away on her dad’s side of the bed. It feels… invasive. I should express pride, and I am proud, but I’m also private. I like to write alone and in the quiet. I like to think I won’t have to censor myself because a child might (will) glance over at my screen.

Why don’t I chase her out of here? Because if she wants to write, there’s no way I’ll do anything to threaten that impulse. She stays.

However, I’m doing some good outlining and character sketching, so… production. Okay. And I can outlast her. She’ll get put to bed eventually.

Don't ask about the man in the living room practicing his trumpet while the football game blasts in the background.

What distractions? I eat distractions for breakfast.

ETA: Hurray! She's wandered off to bug her dad, and I've anagrammed a character name. Much fun.

ETA: Mission accomplished 4 hours earlier than yesterday. 4 pages done, and painlessly once child occupied herself elsewhere. Character from an older story reconceived and with that character perhaps the story as well. We'll see. Writing feels fun again tonight.

Day one resolution recap

I struggled to write four pages the first day. I use single-spacing in Times New Roman, 12 pt to force myself to write more, more, more, but I worry I won't keep this pace up once school begins. I may resort to double-spacing sooner rather than later.

Got bored with journaling quickly and moved into fic. Wrote part of a scene.

Freezing and storing food for the semester continues. I made a huge batch of Coq au Vin last night. Enough for two meals. For the dinner I actually served the family I went ultra simple: bruschetta topped with fresh mozzarella. I know you can use day old bread, but I started with a fresh loaf of French, lightly toasted. Delicious.

I haven't cooked in so long. During the semester we tend to eat out every night. I blame my commute. One hour of heavy traffic at either end of my day. By the time I get home, I don't want to talk to anyone, much less cook for them. Husband suffers a longer commute than I, so I can't foist the work off on him. I hope all the cooking I'm doing now makes a difference.

New Year’s Resolution:

I resolve to write more prose this year, and to do so using the private function on my lj. While you won't see this work, at least I will do it. Goal -- 4 pages of prose per day no matter what it is. I begin simply today with a journal entry about my writing process. I write it with all of you in mind as audience, but without showing it to you.

It's an enlightening bit of soul-searching, and it's the kind of assignment which allows me to succeed. I can do this. I can write prose again.

ETA: I'm surprisingly good at keeping New Year's Resolutions, btw.

ETA: I realize I made something close to the same resolution a couple of years back and succeeded with it. Don't remember why I lapsed, but the interim has hurt. I'm struggling to make my four pages here on the first day. I'm up to three, but experiencing all kinds of self doubt. Shit. I've always said I'm a poet, not a writer. Otoh, Jenn argued a long while ago I'm also a novelist who just hasn't written a first novel yet. I'd like to make her assessment finally come true. One more page. I can do this.

ETA: A scene. I have a scene, and it's starting to finally write itself. That's what I miss. The not trying. The letting it say what it wants to say. The flow, and you don't remember after that you had to DO anything. It just speaks.

Forgive me...

for I am a Lush newbie. I said in a comment reply that I didn't like the Amazonian massage bar. As with other Lush products, I should know to try before I criticize. What doesn't smell good in the bag or on first contact with skin often adjusts to my body chemistry after an hour. I now love the Amazonian bar. Wiccy Magic Muscles is still my favorite, but Amazonian smells lovely, too.

***

Went out last night. Got in much earlier than last year and drank far less. Still managed to get nothing done today. No cooking. Will cook and freeze more food tomorrow.

***

The new semester begins soon. I don't want to go back to work. At all. Must psych myself into it. Blech.

Keeping Track

I've pulled the following from yesterday's entry to track my progress. I start late today, but I finished the last dish at 12:30 a.m., so I'm moving slowly. I also have a party to attend tonight. Who knows how much I can accomplish today or tomorrow? It's the same party I attended last year, when I came home at 5:00 a.m. smelling like a city bus stop. Perhaps a little self control is in order this time.

What I've made and stashed in the freezer so far:
Pot Roast
Pakistani Chicken
Tortilla Soup
Minestrone
Tomato Basil Soup
Baked Mustard Chicken
ETA: Giada's Artichoke Soup
ETA: Shrimp Etouffe
ETA: Coq au Vin

What I have yet to make:
Greek Lemon Soup (Again, does anyone know how it freezes?)
Chicken Cacciatore

I have three pounds of shrimp to get through, so I'll make other shrimp dishes as they occur to me. The same goes for chicken and vegetables. I hadn't planned the Minestrone or the Baked Mustard Chicken, but when I thought of them I realized they'd freeze well. I expect to continue improvising like that.

ETA: Shrimp and chicken all gone. Will return to the store. Cooking finished for the day. Almost time to go out.

Cooking.

Spent several hours deep cleaning the kitchen yesterday for cooking today. Used the glass cleaner on the stove top, the stainless steel cleaner on all the appropriate appliances. The granite reflects light again. My kitchen sparkles. It never sparkles.

Bought $260 worth of food last night with the goal in mind of cooking all of it plus what's in the freezer and fridge. Sick of eating out because I'm too tired to cook for three when I get home from work. I wanted to make enough to get to Spring Break, but this probably won't last more than a week or two the way my family eats. Not sure it's worth it. However, the cooking feels luxurious.

What I've made and stashed in the freezer so far:
Pot Roast
Pakistani Chicken
Tortilla Soup
ETA: Minestrone
ETA: Tomato Basil Soup
ETA: Baked Mustard Chicken

What I have yet to make today:
Greek Lemon Soup (May eat it right away -- worried it won't freeze well. Does anyone know how it freezes?)
Chicken Cacciatore
Coq au Vin
Shrimp Ettoufe
ETA: Giada's Artichoke Soup

Don't know what else I'll do. I have plenty of vegetables, shrimp and chicken to work with plus what's in the pantry I haven't even considered.

I'm having a ball, btw. I love to cook when it's like this -- on vacation, when there's time to enjoy. When it's zen, not forced. The house smells amazing.

***

On a different note, I gave daughter my Lush bath jelly -- the white one that's meant to smell like Mimosa. It smelled like furniture polish on me. Surprise! It smells fantastic on her. Body chemistry. Huh.

ETA: For those who don't know, the luggage arrived. It speaks Portugese and complains we brought it back before Carneval, but it's here. :)

Progress

We've received email notifying us one of our bags is on the way. I hope it's the one with daughter's Christmas presents. :)

ETA: The other bag is coming, too. *sigh*
