I'm in the process of deleting all my journals at LJ, and I'm just paranoid enough to wonder why I keep hitting glitches as I navigate this process. When I deleted the first one, Firefox shut down as I attempted to fill in the form explaining why I made this decision. It happened as I typed my objections to Strikethrough '07, corporate censorship of content, LJ's shoddy treatment of abuse survivors, and the reporting of artists to law enforcement over fanart that's certainly not illegal. I was into my second of two brief sentences, so I know it wasn't the length. I can't help but wonder.

I hit another glitch when I tried to log into an account I created to aid in teaching my Women's Lit course. I couldn't remember the password, so I tried my usual three, only for the first time ever, when I failed on my third or fourth attempt, I received a message informing me LJ had temporarily banned my IP address for multiple login failures. I'd appreciate the security measure if not for the bad timing and the fact it's never happened before.

I'll leave this journal up for one or two more days while I add friends at the other sites, but then it's gone. I'm fed up with the neocons now running what used to be a wonderful service. Adios, LJ.

Thanks for the warning. I'm currently sticking it out, though if this continues I will migrate with the rest. I have a couple of questions, if you don't mind:

1. Are you reposting your old entries at a new journal? I'd hate to lose them completely.
2. Will you be cross-posting to these 3 journals? I don't have and don't really want to get a JF account.
3. Will you be locking stuff? (In other words, what if I create an RSS feed to read an outside journal here? Will I be missing a bunch?) I assume the answer's yes, but I wanted to make sure.

From: [identity profile] devin-chain.livejournal.com

Good questions. I'm not especially tech savvy, but I'll answer as best I can.

1.) I wouldn't know how to repost the old entries without spamming the flists at the other sites with 5 to 6 years worth of content at once, if that makes sense. However, I did archive using lj-book immediately following Strikethrough. You're welcome to any that material.

2.) I will cross-post, so I bookmarked the link Te made to, um, this:
http://cmshaw.livejournal.com/453907.html?mode=reply
which I will study and attempt to apply. Even if I can't figure that out, I'm sure to copy/paste content from journal to journal -- at least until fandom settles on one new journal home.

3.) I will probably lock posts, but I don't want to lose you by doing this. I'll try to figure out some way to keep you in the loop.

For 1), method #2 at this post (http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.html?style=mine) looks worthwhile, with the caveats discussed there. Since I don't have much in the way of filtering, and since I don't have filters set up yet at those sites, it doesn't look like a huge problem. I'm about to try it and will do a post reporting on it.

I will try to figure out how to read everything. It will be a pain -- I have been spoiled by LJ's integration of RSS feeds -- but I can do it eventually.

From: [identity profile] devin-chain.livejournal.com

Thanks for the link.

I'm sure to keep some of my posts unlocked, so RSS feed might still work. Sort of. Maybe I can use unlocked posts to announce I'm hiding fic under locked posts to get the word out or something. I have no idea whether or not I'm making sense right now. I learned of the existence of white chocolate martinis last night and therefore feel appropriately flattened today. Oops.

I don't know how you would use this url to subscribe to the rss feed of my insanejournal account, but it's here:

http://devin-chain.insanejournal.com/data/rss/

Since I'm crossposting to IJ, GJ and JF, this should get you the feed. I'm likely to lock fic, but as I said the other day, I'll announce they're there.

Thank you! I'm trying to figure out how to keep up with the possibility of different people friendslocking on different services, and I have confidence that fannish ingenuity will soon figure out a way, but in the meantime this is very helpful. And I especially appreciate the announce/post distinction.

Totally understand why you're leaving, thank you for the warning. Commenting so that when I go through my flist and re-add everyone on other journals, I'll still have your info. :)

From: [identity profile] devin-chain.livejournal.com

Thank you. I'll definitely friend back on the other sites.

*hugs*

I will hugely miss you, but totally understand. So insane, not a fun place anymore.
I doubt I'll leave this ship, I'm sure I have some sort of accounts already, never used them thou.
Good luck! :-)

I'm not far behind you, my friend. I can't stay here and feel good about it. I may keep my account for a while to keep up with some people that don't move but I already have an account at Greatest Journal and will be creating accounts at Insane Journal and JournalFen as well. GJ will be my primary location but I want the others jsut in case. We shall see. See you elsewhere! *hugs*

From: [identity profile] txredhead.livejournal.com

Oh yeah! I can show you how to save your posts and put them up on the new accounts without spamming flists. I'll have to do it once I get home tonight but would be happy to do so.

I'm leaving as much to support the fanartists as I do it as a just-in-case measure. I don't see a difference between visual image and fic, and I've certainly written my share of stories about an underage Clark Kent.

I'm not moving until I've finished my dissertation in September. I don't have the time at the moment, but I've set up accounts at GJ, IN and JF and I've friended you on all. Trying to reconstruct my flist is a pain, but staying on LJ is just not a sensible option anymore.

From: [identity profile] devin-chain.livejournal.com

*hugs hard* I had no idea you were working on a diss right now. I'm so excited for you!

Thanks for friending me on the other journals so quickly. I saw you pop in when I refreshed a moment ago.

Dissertation. Wow. *beams*

Thanks so much for letting us know. I'm keeping lj for now but I'm on the others as well. I'm still digitalwave on gj, ij and jf so I'll be looking for you there.

It makes me so sad to see things coming to this. :(

From: [identity profile] devin-chain.livejournal.com

I'm sad, too. I have you friended at GJ and will friend you at the other two as well. *hugs hard*

Here's a link with instructions on transporting your journal to the new site. It works really well, I've moved things over to both ij & gj so far. You lose comments but most everything else moves over.

One thing's for sure, we can sure start to get organized when we have to, can't we?

I don't think that neocons are running the site. But I do think that the current political environment has had an impact on it, as well as the usual commercialization issues.

I'll catch you on the flip side. I'm up on insanejournal.

From: [identity profile] devin-chain.livejournal.com

You're right. I know lots of good peeps work at lj, but those speaking for the organization sound neocon in their defense of draconian tactics.

See you at Insanejournal.

*hugs*

I definitely understand your position. I'll be sure and keep up with you at one of your other journals, sweetie.

Think I've managed to friend you everywhere except for Journalfen - I don't have an account there *sniff*

Don't worry, hon, you can't get rid of me that easily ;) *hugs*

From: [identity profile] percysowner.livejournal.com

I totally understand why you are doing this. I've friended you over on IJ and GJ (I don't have a JF account). I look for you over there. Thanks for the warning.

Thanks for friending me at the other journals. :)
